Often when a man struggles with substance abuse, he may not recognize the symptoms of another co-occurring disorder. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, or other disorders may just feel like effects of the drugs he is using. However, at The Landing, we recognize that it is all too common for men to struggle with both substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, so we emphasize a thorough intake assessment to ensure that every client receives the comprehensive treatment he needs to give him the best possible chance of success in treatment.
Struggling with both a substance use disorder and another co-occurring mental health disorder can cause a man to experience a complex mix of symptoms that can all build off of each other. For example, anxiety may cause a man to drink to calm his nerves, but soon the availability of alcohol and the damage alcohol abuse may be causing in his life can drive him further into anxiety and thus further into drinking. The damage caused by this cycle of substance abuse and mental illness can be greater than the sum of its parts, as the combination of both can be exponentially more devastating than either substance abuse or mental illness on its own. Men in this situation often require the help of a specialized treatment center in order to regain their health and freedom.
At The Landing, we treat a number of co-occurring conditions, some of which can include:
- Depressive disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Anxiety disorders
Once the members of our treatment team have identified any co-occurring disorders with which a man may be struggling, they are then prepared to provide the comprehensive, holistic treatment that The Landing is known for. Each man will receive an individualized treatment plan, specially designed to meet his needs, that takes into account both his primary substance use disorder and his co-occurring disorders.
At The Landing we do not merely treat symptoms; instead, we provide skills and support, such as individual and group therapy, to help our clients become more fully alive and live free from the influence of substances. Individual therapy is an intimate, one-on-one space for each man to explore the issues underneath his substance abuse and to be supported in his journey towards sobriety. Groups are spaces where a man can learn and practice recovery skills in a safe, counselor-led environment.
At The Landing, we understand that struggling with a substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental illness can be a profound challenge, but with the caring and comprehensive treatment provided by our experienced staff, it is possible for men to take the first steps on a journey to sobriety and health.
