Helping a loved one get treatment for bipolar disorder
When you have a loved one who is addicted to substances and also struggling with a mental health condition like bipolar disorder, it can be tremendously upsetting to stand by and feel as though you are doing nothing, especially when your loved one’s condition seems to worsen. The friends and family members of someone who struggles with this condition suffer as well, and the heartbreak can often be too much to bear. If you are concerned about someone you love, there are things that you can do to help him obtain the help he needs. Consider the following:
- Spend some time educating yourself about substance use disorder and bipolar disorder. Learn about these conditions and how they exist separately and together. You can do this through going to the library, searching the web, reaching out to local treatment centers, and more. By doing this, not only will you have a better understanding of both of these diseases, but you will also obtain insight into what your loved one is experiencing.
- Do some research to find out where local treatment centers and/or programs are, and determine if they provide the care that will benefit your loved one.
- Speak with your loved one about what he is going through. Talk to him about treatment options that you have uncovered for him, and gently encourage him to obtain help. Speak non-judgmentally and from a caring standpoint to help further his chances of engaging in treatment.
- Offer to take care of the things he will leave behind if treatment is obtained, such as watching his children, collecting his mail, preparing meals, etc. so that he can focus on his health.
- Volunteer to accompany him on his journey towards finding out more about treatment programs and options for care.
As you work to help your loved one, always remember the importance of caring for yourself. While your loved one is battling a substance use disorder and bipolar disorder, you can be greatly affected and require your own support as well.
Why consider treatment for bipolar disorder at The Landing of Newport Beach, CA
Men who are simultaneously battling a substance use disorder and bipolar disorder will likely face a number of challenges throughout their lives if they do not obtain treatment. Bipolar disorder, specifically, causes tremendous fluctuations in mood, causing an individual to go from extreme euphoria to deep depression very quickly. Substance abuse can grow in intensity during these changes in mood, as an individual looks to self-medicate himself. If bipolar disorder is not treated, and substance abuse continues, an individual can feel the effects of his condition in his work life, home life, social life, and overall wellbeing. His physical health and mental health can decline significantly as these co-occurring conditions persist. This can lead to job loss, divorce, family discord, organ damage, overdose, and potentially death. However, there are treatment options available that can help individuals obtain the proper care so they can learn how to manage bipolar symptoms and stop abusing substances.

Furthermore, the dedicated professionals at our center are fully devoted to helping men overcome their addictions while reaching and exceeding all of their treatment goals.
When a man elects to receive care at our beachfront center, his first experience will be a complete assessment to identify his unique needs and determine which types of treatment will best meet those needs. With an emphasis on healing each client in mind, body, and spirit, the following types of treatment may become part of a client’s exceptional treatment experience at The Landing:
Medical detoxification: Once an individual stops engaging in substance abuse, uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms can emerge and compromise his efforts to fully participate in the recovery process. When this is the case for a man who has come to The Landing for treatment, our staff is able to help him undergo medically monitored detoxification. Once detox is complete, we then welcome the individual into our community, ready to help him win the war against addiction.
Medication management: For some, managing the symptoms of bipolar disorder requires more than just honing the necessary coping skills to do so effectively. When this is the case, certain psychotropic medications may be helpful for our clients. Within 72 hours of being at The Landing, each man will meet with our expertly trained psychiatrist, who can determine if such medication is appropriate. If medication is prescribed to help a client manage the symptoms of bipolar disorder, our nursing and clinical staff members closely monitor the progress of each client for the duration of treatment.
Individual therapy: Offered three times per week for clients in Phase I of our treatment, individual therapy sessions can be invaluable experiences for men who are working to overcome an addiction and bipolar disorder. Men meet with marriage and family therapist interns for two sessions each week, and then have a scheduled session with one of our certified substance abuse counselors. There is much to gain from receiving individualized attention, and we believe that men can benefit greatly from being able to process their experiences with knowledgeable professionals.
Group therapy: At The Landing, we want to provide our clients with the support, education, and guidance they need to be successful in overcoming an addiction to substances and mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder. Group therapy sessions, the forums in which men at The Landing convene as a united front against addiction, are integral to the care we supply. The following groups, which are held multiple times per week, are among those that a client may participate in while in our care:

Family therapy: Having the support of loved ones while on the journey toward a recovered life can enhance a person’s treatment experience. At The Landing, we want to help our clients and those closest to them heal and grow as a unified front against addiction. Led by marriage and family therapy interns, family sessions are available on an as-needed basis, and can help rebuild the bond between our clients and those whom they hold dear.
Family Program: In addition to helping families heal during family sessions, The Landing is proud to offer a Family Program to help friends and family members learn how they can best help themselves during their loved one’s recovery, gain the skills needed to provide effective support, and become more informed about the disease of addiction. This program enables those closest to our clients to participate in group discussions, multi-family sessions with other families, and presentations led by our dedicated staff members.
The aforementioned treatment methods can be incorporated into a client’s personalized treatment plan depending upon his specific needs. Treatment needs and goals are initially assessed during our streamlined admissions process so that the resulting treatment plan elicits the most favorable treatment outcomes. Additionally, should a client’s needs change during the therapeutic process, his treatment plan can reflect these changes and certain interventions can be added as needed.
Following completion of Phase I of The Landing’s treatment, men can then embark on Phase II, and then Phase III of our care. We have designed our programming to see our clients through until they are fully ready to resume their lives, free from the chains of addiction, confident in managing the symptoms of bipolar disorder, and armed with the skills to remain sober for a lifetime.
