How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for depression treatment

Bearing witness to one’s husband, brother, son, or other loved one as he battles addiction and depression can be an exceptionally painful experience. You, as a concerned friend or family member, may be unsure as to what role you can play in helping the person you care about heal and recover from such concerns, but there are things that you can certainly do at this time. The following suggestions are those that can help you assist your loved one in getting the treatment he needs:

  • Learn about your loved one’s addiction and depression, and learn about how these two conditions can impact one another.
  • Talk with your loved one about the need for treatment, and be open to hearing what he has to say. During this conversation, share your own concerns and talk about the benefits of receiving care.
  • Assist your loved one in locating treatment centers that will be the most effective. Consider your loved one’s needs, and encourage your loved one to reach out to his center of choice so that he can ask questions and learn what the recovery process will look like.
  • Encourage your loved one to schedule an intake, and ask if it would be helpful if you went along to that appointment.
  • Assist your loved one as he transitions into treatment. Offer to help pack, drive him there, and ask him what else you can do to be helpful during this time.
  • See if your loved one’s treatment center offers family therapy sessions, and try to be present in these sessions.
  • Consult with your loved one’s providers to see what you can do to help you loved one be successful while in treatment.
  • Be sure to also care for yourself by seeking your own counseling services or joining a support group for those whose loved ones are struggling with an addiction.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for depression at The Landing of Newport Beach, CA

The quality of life for a man who is struggling with untreated depression and an addiction can be quite dismal if these conditions remain long-standing. Over time, an addiction can become more severe, and the symptoms of depression can worsen to a degree that makes day-to-day life rife with sadness and despair. These two concerns can cause strain in relationships, occupational failure, financial difficulties, and a number of health concerns that could be life-ending. Prolonged depression can also cause a person to experience ideations of suicide, which could lead that individual to engage in self-harming behaviors and even attempts at suicide. However, should a person want to prevent and avoid these consequences, receiving treatment that effectively cares for addictions and co-occurring depressive disorders is the most beneficial way to reclaim the life that these two conditions once consumed.

Types of depression treatment offered at The Landing of Newport Beach, CA

Located along the shores of the majestic Pacific Ocean, The Landing is a leading provider of addiction treatment for adult men age 18 and above. One of the nation’s top 10 luxury rehab centers, The Landing provides clinically excellent care that offers men who are battling addictions and co-occurring mental health conditions the guidance, support, and holistic interventions that they need to live healthier drug-free lives. Through its innovative use of person-centered, cognitive behavioral, and trauma-focused approaches, The Landing sets the standard for truly effective addiction treatment.

Treatment at The Landing occurs in three phases of care: Phase I, residential treatment; Phase II, partial hospitalization programming; and Phase III, intensive outpatient care. These three phases combine to create a full continuum of treatment services that enable clients who come to this center in their darkest hour to leave with the bright promise of a substance-free life. Furthermore, the dedicated professionals at our center are fully devoted to helping men overcome their addictions while reaching and exceeding all of their treatment goals.

When a man elects to receive care at our beachfront center, his first experience will be a complete assessment to identify his unique needs and determine which types of treatment will best meet those needs. With an emphasis on healing each client in mind, body, and spirit, the following types of treatment may become part of a client’s exceptional treatment experience at The Landing:

Medical detoxification: Once an individual stops engaging in substance abuse, uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms can emerge and compromise his efforts to fully participate in the recovery process. When this is the case for a man who has come to The Landing for treatment, our staff is able to help him undergo medically monitored detoxification. Once detox is complete, we then welcome the individual into our community, ready to help him win the war against addiction.

Medication management: For some, managing the symptoms of depression requires more than just honing the necessary coping skills to do so effectively. When this is the case, certain psychotropic medications may be helpful for our clients. Within 72 hours of being at The Landing, each man will meet with our expertly trained psychiatrist, who can determine if such medication is appropriate. If medication is prescribed to help a client manage the symptoms of depression, our nursing and clinical staff members closely monitor the progress of each client for the duration of treatment.

Individual therapy: Offered three times per week for clients in Phase I of our treatment, individual therapy sessions can be invaluable experiences for men who are working to overcome an addiction and depression. Men meet with marriage and family therapist interns for two sessions each week, and then have a scheduled session with one of our certified substance abuse counselors. There is much to gain from receiving individualized attention, and we believe that men can benefit greatly from being able to process their experiences with knowledgeable professionals.

Group therapy: At The Landing of Newport Beach, we want to provide our clients with the support, education, and guidance they need to be successful in overcoming an addiction to substances and mental health conditions, such as depressive disorders. Group therapy sessions, the forums in which men at The Landing convene as a united front against addiction, are integral to the care we supply. The following groups, which are held multiple times per week, are among those that a client may participate in while in our care:

  • Clinical lectures
  • Nutrition groups
  • Panel
  • Emotion regulation group
  • Recovery movies
  • Psychoeducation groups
  • Process groups
  • Trauma groups
  • Professional development group
  • Life skills implementation
  • 12-Step groups

Experiential therapy: In order to help our clients improve their overall health and well-being, we are proud to offer an “east meets west” approach to care. Our experiential therapies, which help our clients have a uniquely individualized experience in a group setting, allow men to benefit from therapeutic techniques that are able to heal their minds, bodies, and spirits. The interventions listed below are among the experiential therapy activities that may be included in a client’s customized treatment plan:

  • Meditation
  • Journaling
  • Narrative therapy
  • Yoga
  • Art therapy group
  • Hypnotherapy groups
  • Music therapy
  • Acupuncture groups
  • Massages
  • Relationships group
  • Hiking
  • Gym time
  • Health and wellness group

Family therapy: Having the support of loved ones while on the journey toward a recovered life can enhance a person’s treatment experience. At The Landing, we want to help our clients and those closest to them heal and grow as a unified front against addiction. Led by marriage and family therapist interns, family sessions are available on an as-needed basis, and can help rebuild the bond between our clients and those who they hold dear.

Family Program: In addition to helping families heal during family sessions, The Landing is proud to offer a Family Program to help friends and family members learn how they can best help themselves during their loved one’s recovery, gain the skills needed to provide effective support, and become more informed about the disease of addiction. This program enables those closest to our clients to participate in group discussions, multi-family sessions with other families, and presentations led by our dedicated staff members.

The aforementioned rehabilitation and treatment methods can be incorporated into a client’s personalized treatment plan depending upon his specific needs. Treatment needs and goals are initially assessed during our streamlined admissions process so that the resulting treatment plan elicits the most favorable treatment outcomes. Additionally, should a client’s needs change during the therapeutic process, his treatment plan can reflect these changes and certain interventions can be added as needed.

Following completion of Phase I of The Landing’s treatment, men can then embark on Phase II, and then Phase III of our care. We have designed our programming to see our clients through until they are fully ready to resume their lives, free from the chains of addiction, confident in managing the symptoms of depression, and armed with the skills to remain sober for a lifetime.

To learn more about the phases of treatment that we offer, feel free to contact us at your convenience. At The Landing of Newport Beach, your new substance-free life is ready to take flight.
